Sunday Ramirez, who is also accused of aggravated battery, is in the Orange County Jail. He had to spend the night in handcuffs, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Ramirez was also charged with aggravated battery/obstructing police who are investigating the incident. He was in the orange jail Thursday night and is still held without bond.

The incident started around 4:20 a.m. Friday when police received a report of a possible gunshot victim in the 5000 block of East Washington Street, deputies said. The victim, whose name wasn’t released, told them he was shot in the right leg. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police located Ramirez, who is a student at Loyola Marymount University, at 11 a.m., the report said.

When confronted by police, Ramirez claimed he was “stuck in traffic,” according to the report. He also said he had been the victim of an attempted robbery, the report said.

One of the officers noted Ramirez was wearing headphones and sunglasses, but had an iPod. The other officer also noticed Ramirez was carrying two empty bottles of liquid.

“He appeared concerned for his life and was trying to maintain control of the situation, which involved him trying to run over his (victim), which caused him to shoot him in the leg,” the report stated.

A photo provided by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office shows a woman with a gunshot wound when Lopez was shot.

Two of the officer’s fellow officers helped Lopez after the shooting, according to the report.

“I can’t believe I got to work that day, and I haven’t seen him since,” said Sgt. Robert Kavanagh, who witnessed the suspect flee.

The officers found Lopez and escorted him out of the school to a waiting vehicle, according to the report.

“I want to thank all the officers who immediately helped this victim and who responded so quickly to help him get the best medical attention,” said Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck. “The efforts of the officers and their quick actions contributed directly to the officer’s recovery and the positive outcome of the incident.”

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim, his girlfriend, and his family for their emotional and physical trauma during this ordeal,” said Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas.
